VIVIAN - Component-based software
development for mobile platforms
The objective of the Vivian project is to provide an adequate platform for the software development
for handheld terminals and PDA devices (e.g. the Series 5 from PSION and the Communicator from NOKIA).
This structured approach will enable third party enterprises to easily develop software applicatiions for
such devices.

The consortium will combine Symbian's EPOC operating system for PDAs with a
NOKIA proprietary implementation of OMG's ORB. This way a platform based on full-fledged component technology, extensible on request according tothe applications
needs, will be brought into light
Key to the industrial success
The key to the industrial success of the VIVIAN approach lies in a variety of facts.
- The interests of the companies providing the platform elements are
well preserved. The technological architecture enable partners to keep the
source code proprietary.
- Third party vendors are enabled to produce their own components,
which enhance the platform's functionality.
- The platform integrates and supports the specific needs of their applications.
